Dr Fickert was a prize student at university. He won 3 undergraduate prizes and passed his tertiary examinations, his bachelor in dentistry in 1987, with a distinction. Since then he has continually updated himself with further training and is now a registered Specialist in Orthodontics.
Dr Fickert is a Tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons and a Vocational Trainer, training young dentists and therapists. He also sits on the Birmingham East and North PCT Commissioning panel in charge of commissioning for primary dental care in the region, and is a Dental Practice Accreditation Scheme inspector and a Tutor for Royal College of Surgeons. He is regularly called on to give talks to Vocational Dental Practitioners, Local Dental Committees and at the Royal College of Surgeons.

In the merchant navy Dr Fickert reached the rank of Commander.
He is a patron of the Birmingham Hippodrome and sponsors a local school’s football team. He supports his community by being a member of the local residents’ association. Dr Fickert supports charity by performing parachute jumps for Mencap and running marathons for charity. In February 2013, he ran the Birmingham half-marathon for Acorns.
