Hello everyone,
I’m Dr. Noor Aziz, and today I want to share some of my favourite tips for maintaining excellent oral hygiene. As a dentist, I’ve seen firsthand how a strong oral care routine can make a world of difference in your overall health and well-being. While brushing your teeth twice a day is essential, there’s much more to oral hygiene than just that. Let’s dive into some key practices that can keep your smile bright and your mouth healthy.
It might sound simple, but brushing your teeth correctly and regularly is the foundation of good oral hygiene. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and make sure to brush for at least two minutes, covering all surfaces of your teeth—front, back, and chewing surfaces. Don’t forget to gently brush your tongue, as it can harbour bacteria that contribute to bad breath.
Flossing is just as important as brushing, if not more so. It removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth and under the gumline—places your toothbrush can’t reach. Traditional floss is effective, but I have a personal favourite that takes flossing to the next level: the Waterpik flosser.
Let me tell you why I’m such a big fan of Waterpik flossers. These devices use a stream of pulsating water to clean between your teeth and along your gum line. Not only do they remove plaque and food particles with ease, but they’re also incredibly gentle on your gums, which makes them perfect for patients with sensitive gums or those who find traditional flossing difficult or uncomfortable.
One of the things I love most about Waterpik flossers is how effective they are at reaching areas that are often missed by traditional floss. The water jet can get into tiny crevices and under dental work like braces, bridges, and crowns, ensuring a thorough clean every time. Plus, they’re quick and easy to use, making it more likely that you’ll stick to a daily flossing routine.
What you eat plays a significant role in your oral health. Sugary and acidic foods can lead to tooth decay and enamel erosion. I recommend limiting sugary snacks and drinks, and opting for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Foods high in calcium, such as dairy products, can help strengthen your teeth, while crunchy fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots can naturally clean your teeth as you chew.
Even with the best at-home care, it’s important to visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. We can catch potential issues early, remove any stubborn tartar buildup, and provide personalised advice to help you maintain optimal oral health. I recommend scheduling a dental visit every six months, or more frequently if you have specific dental concerns.
Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps wash away food particles and bacteria, and it also keeps your mouth hydrated. Saliva plays a critical role in neutralising acids produced by bacteria in your mouth, so staying hydrated is a simple way to support your oral health.
To conclude maintaining good oral hygiene doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require consistency and the right tools. Incorporating a Waterpik flosser into your routine can make a significant difference in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. I encourage you to give it a try, especially if you struggle with traditional flossing or have dental work that makes cleaning between your teeth a challenge.
