A recent study has revealed that sufferers of gum disease are three times more likely to end up on a ventilator or in ICU after contracting Covid-19.
This statistic was part of an article recently published in The Telegraph* detailing the issues Covid patients can encounter if they suffer from Periodontitis.
Periodontitis (also called gum disease) is a severe gum infection that damages the soft tissue and if left untreated can lead to tooth loss as well as other very serious health complications. The latter happens when the bacteria responsible for Periodontitis enters your bloodstream through gum tissue and adversely affects other parts of your body. It’s been linked to rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and respiratory disease.
But, don’t panic. Whilst Periodontitis is common and generally the result of poor oral hygiene it’s also largely preventable. By looking after your teeth properly, brushing twice a day, flossing and visiting your dentist for regular check-ups you can reduce your chance of developing Periodontitis. Following these key points for good oral hygiene will also stand you in good stead for successful treatment of gum disease should you develop it.
